Student Spotlight: Gladys Gonzalez
MC3 Cohort 8 | Harbor Occupational Center
Gladys Gonzalez is a proud graduate of the MC3 (Multi-Craft Core Curriculum) program at Harbor Occupational Center, where she turned her interest in construction into a promising career in the skilled trades. Drawn to MC3 by her desire to learn more about construction, Gladys quickly discovered a passion for hands-on work and exploration of various construction trades.
During the program, Gladys especially enjoyed working with tools, reading blueprints, building projects, and participating in workshops and field trips to Union Training Centers. She credits the instructors and training center professionals for taking the time to answer questions and provide real-world insight into the industry. As the only female in her cohort, she initially anticipated challenges, but the experience became empowering. Through MC3, Gladys strengthened her confidence, resilience, and belief in herself.
After completing the program, Gladys applied to Laborers, Local 300 and was accepted as an apprentice. She was recently hired by Spiniello Pipeline Construction, where she is continuing her apprenticeship and gaining valuable on-the-job experience. Her long-term goal is to master her trade, become a journeyman, and grow into a leadership and training role within the industry.
Reflecting on her time at Harbor Occupational Center, Gladys shares that HOC provided her with the skills, preparation, and support needed to succeed in the field. Her only regret is not enrolling sooner. One quote she carries with her from the program continues to guide her journey:
“Always be ready and stay hungry.”
Gladys’s story is a powerful example of how dedication, quality training, and self-belief can open doors to rewarding careers in the skilled trades.
