The Medical Assistant (MA) Program at Harbor Occupational Center focuses on the skills related to the practice of patient care. Our competency-based program provides students with the necessary skills to work in clinical settings such as general practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, after hours care, and specialty practices in the ambulatory care settings.

Students are instructed on physical patient exam, electrocardiography (EKG), administration of medication, injections, venipuncture, nutrition, vital signs and medical terminology. Students receive training to take the National Healthcareer Association - CCMA Certification Exam. Students also earn their CPR Certification.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Students must be 18 years of age to participate in the MA program.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 8.0 reading and math level as measured by the CASAS goals test.
  • Students must obtain a physical examination with a physician’s clearance that the student has no limitations to perform the duties of a medical assistant.
  • Students must provide physician verification and/or proof of titer for the following vaccinations: hepatitis; measles, mumps, varicella, Tdap, TB (two-step or clear chest X-ray), negative RPR; and the current year’s flu vaccine. 
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Students will participate in a four-week externship.
